Meet the ASUS ZenBook 3
The ASUS ZenBook 3 (UX390) is a professional-grade laptop with performance chops that are matched only by an exquisite design.
Next-gen ZenBook design
The ZenBook 3 pushes the envelope of design when it comes to thickness and weight. Measuring only 11.9 mm thin and 910 grams, it beats out the 2016 MacBook in both departments. The overall footprint is identical to an A4 sheet of paper, making it an easy fit for your bag. An ultra-thin cooling and hinge system help to achieve this feat. Both are only 3 mm thin, while still rigorously tested for day-to-day use. The inclusion of a sole USB-C port also helps streamline the overall shape.
A slim profile isn’t the only thing making the ZenBook 3 a fine-looking piece of hardware. A 40-step spun-metal design on the rear adds a subtle texture conveying class and balance. Meanwhile, the diamond-cut edges are polished to showcase a 2-phase anodized light gold trim which stands out against all three color options: Royal Blue, Rose Gold, and Quartz Grey. The body is made from aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, which is strong enough to stand up to long-term wear and tear, but light enough to carry around without a second thought.
The display of the ZenBook 3 measures in at 12.5 inches and a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Without a doubt, it strikes new levels of brilliance. 350-nit brightness keeps the screen fully visible in outdoor scenarios. Gorilla Glass 4 protection keeps the surface impeccable in the face of scratches and impact, too. A 72% color gamut with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio makes for a TV-grade picture in every application. The 7.6 mm bezel leaves an 82% screen-to-body ratio. That means less distractions and more of what you love.
A keyboard that’s ready to work
The full-bodied typing experience makes the ZenBook 3 perfectly suited for day-long work. 0.8 mm key travel is ample compared to other PCs in the category. In particular, the distance between the center of each key is 19.8 mm. This is called X-pitch, and is on par with what you’ll see in standard desktop keyboards.
Each key is fully backlit. Just below the keyboard are a touchpad and optional fingerprint scanner with Windows Hello support. Multitouch gestures help you get around quickly, while palm rejection ensures no accidental touches while typing.
Of course, there’s support for external keyboards, mice, and monitors thanks to the included Mini Dock. It has a USB 3.0 slot, HDMI-out, and USB-C for charging. The optional Universal Dock expands the possibilities further with two full-sized USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, ethernet, audio jacks, and a 3-in-1 SD card reader.
On the inside, the ZenBook 3 has all the components for top-of-the-line performance. Up to an Intel® Core™ i7, 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage is more than enough for daily tasks, and up to the demands of intensive applications. The third-generation PCIe x 4 SSD is able to read and write data at 1709 MB/s, which is a full 2.3 times faster than the MacBook. The 2133 MHz LPDDR3 RAM is equally speedy, clocking in at 25.28 GB/s, trouncing the MacBook’s 22.35 GB/s speed.
The ZenBook 3 lasts as long as you do. With a 40 Wh battery providing up to 9 hours of constant usage, you’ll always be covered. Even when you only have a bit of time to plug in, the ZenBook 3 captures a 60% charge in 49 minutes flat. Over the long haul, this battery can last three times longer than average lifespans.
On the wireless side, Bluetooth 4.1 helps keep your peripherals connected, while 802.11ac ensures you’ve got the fastest Wi-Fi available. One of those accessories you may want to consider is the new Audio Pod. It produces fantastic 5.1-channel virtual surround sound in a 360-degree arc.
The ZenBook 3 packs a lot of sound for something its size. The quad-speaker SonicMaster Premium audio system provides an altogether cinematic experience. Five-magnet speakers on the underside project loud, low-frequency sound, while the two speakers above the keyboard hit the highs. A smart four-channel amplifier can crank up the volume to impressive levels without distortion, while Harman Kardon’s work under the hood reduces noise and improves clarity on the fly.
